Building a snowman is snow much fun! Building a snowman is one of our favorite winter things to do as a family. However, even without snow, you can have some snowman fun with these 8 snowman books. Check out your library for these and other great snowman books!
8 Snowman Books:
1. The Biggest Snowman Ever by Stephen Kroll–
Friends, Clayton and Desmond, each want to build the biggest snowman ever and win the town competition! These 2 little mice find that building a big snowman is hard work by yourself. They get a great idea to work together to build the biggest snowman. Can they do it? Check your library for this book to find out 🙂
2. How to Catch a Snowman by Adam Wallace–
In this snowman book from the “How to Catch” series, the kids build a snowman who magically comes to life and runs around the school! Now they have to try to trap him. The snowman is much too clever for their traps and leads the kids around on a winter-inspired chase! Will they ever catch him? Preschoolers will enjoy this whimsical story and rhyming text.
3. There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow by Lucille Colandro–
In this silly rhyming story, a cold lady swallows snow (brrr), a scarf, coal, a pipe and other crazy things. Just what is she doing? Finally she can’t take the cold snow inside her tummy anymore so she hiccups twice and a snowman pops out of her mouth. Preschoolers love the rhyming story, the wacky illustrations, and the snowman at the end!
4. Just a Snowman by Mercer Mayer–
My son loves the Little Critter stories! If you aren’t familiar with this series, it is about a little kid (Little Critter), who tries his hardest, but in the process, often makes messes, causes problems, and general disarray! Preschoolers can relate! In this story, Little Critter and Little Sister set out to enjoy a fun snow day. Little Critter wants to build a snowman, but first, he has to help his sister, his dad, and his friend with their snow activities. Finally, Little Critter gets to build his snowman and it turns out great!
5. Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner–
Buehner’s Snowmen have a lot of stories, but this one is my favorite. It explains why our snowmen never look quite the same the next morning. You see, when everyone goes to bed, the snowmen, snowwomen, and snow kids come to life! This is a such a cute story. Told in rhyming text with fantastic illustrations, the reader gets to learn about all of the fun games and activities snowmen do when all of the people are asleep.
6. Snowballs by Lois Ehlert —
I love Lois Ehlert’s collage style pictures that accompany her books! In this wintery story, it is time to build a snow family and snow pets. Ehlert uses lots of collected objects, from seeds to buttons, to decorate the snow family. This is a sparsely worded story, making it a great for wiggly preschoolers. Don’t count on too many wiggles though, because kids will be pouring over the pictures! At the end of the story, Ehlert includes a guide to all of the decorative objects, snow facts, and pictures of real snowmen.
7. Sneezy the Snowman by
Get ready to laugh at this story! Sneezy the snowman is cold, so the kids come up with ideas to warm him up. However, each warm idea turns Sneezy into a puddle! While the story borders on absurd, preschoolers and kindergartners love it! In this rhyming story, the kids share their warm clothes and clever ideas to keep Sneezy from being too cold and too hot.
8. Do You Want a Hug? (a Disney Frozen book) by Kevin Lewis–
Join Olaf (my favorite snowman) in a game of hide-and-seek in the wintery world of Frozen’s Arendelle. This is a fun interactive book, where the reader gets to “play” with Olaf. Olaf’s joy is contagious as he asks the reader to give him a hug. Olaf runs splat into the book page and bonks his nose. He mistakenly thinks that the reader is playing a game and that he can’t get a hug until the game is over. Olaf suggests Leap Troll and Ring Around the Reindeer before settling on hide-and-seek. All right, no peeking as Olaf hides. Can you find him?

I hope you enjoy these snowman books! My son and the preschoolers at the library’s storytime group really liked all of these books. More Snowman Fun!
I have 2 snowman crafts to share with you and a fun winter STEM activity. My son and I enjoyed making these together and we think you have a lot of fun too. We recycled an empty toilet paper roll and turned it into a snowman. It is now part of our winter decorations! We also made a snowman stick puppet. My kiddo had a lot of fun playing with his puppet. We also made Winter Fizz as our STEM activity. It is a sparkly, fizzing science experiment!
Toilet Paper Roll Snowman: turn an empty toilet paper roll into a cute snowman.
Snowman Stick Puppet: download this free PDF template and make your own stick puppet!
Winter Fizz: This is a fun and easy way to incorporate science into your preschooler’s learning. Make sparkly, fizzing “snow” out of baking soda, vinegar, and glitter.
