Tractor Stories

Preschoolers love tractors and other big trucks! Here are eight tractor stories to help feed your preschooler’s love of big machines.

First in the Otis the Tractor stories
Otis

Otis by Loren Long —

Of all of the tractors out there, Otis is my favorite. I love the Otis stories. They are on the long side, but if your preschooler has the patience to sit still, then they are in for a treat with the first book in the Otis the Tractor series. Otis is a sweet, hardworking tractor who befriends the animals on the farm. When a new tractor arrives at the farm, Otis is moved aside and left to rust. None of the animals like this new tractor, however, and they miss their friend, Otis. When the calf gets stuck in the mud, Otis is the only one who can save it.

Tractor Mac stories (book 1)
Tractor Mac Arrives on the Farm

Tractor Mac Arrives on the Farm by Billy Steers —

Meet Mac, a lovable red tractor, in the first book of the Tractor Mac series. In this story, the horse is upset when Tractor Mac arrives and begins to take over all of his jobs on the farm. Is the horse even need anymore? When Tractor Mac and the farmer get stuck, the horse has an important job to do — rescue them! The horse and Mac learn that there is plenty for everyone to do around the farm and a new friendship is born.

Duck on a Tractor

Duck on a Tractor by David Shannon —

David Shannon is one of my favorite authors! At some point, haven’t all of us wondered what it would be like to drive a tractor? Well, Duck is no exception. So when the farmer leaves his tractor unattended, Duck takes it for a ride through town. Astonished townspeople, accidently mayhem, and humorous illustrations will leave preschoolers giggling over the pages. Check out Duck on a Bike for another funny Duck story!

Tremendous Tractors

Tremendous Tractors by Tony Mitton —

Learn about how tractors help on the farm in this tractor edition of Tony Mitton’s “Amazing Machines” series. Cute farm animals show the reader different types of tractors and the jobs that they do. The text is relatively simple and written at a preschool /kindergarten level. Ant Parker’s bright cute, images are always crowd pleasers.

Grandpa’s Tractor

Grandpa’s Tractor by Michael Garland —

This is a sweet inter-generational story about the importance of a tractor on a farm. Grandpa Joe takes his grandson Timmy around the farm that has been in the family for generations. The old farm house, barn, and an old rusty tractor still stand. Grandpa Joe grows nostalgic at the site of the old tractor. He tells Timmy all about the tractor that used be a shiny red and all of the chores the tractor helped with around the farm. The warm memories of the tractor will surely warm the readers’ hearts as well.

Goodnight Tractor

Goodnight Tractor by Michelle Robinson —

In this gentle, rhyming story, preschoolers get to say good night to the tractor and farm before settling down into bed themselves. Sparsely worded with sweet illustrations, kids will love adding thing this book into their bedtime routine.

Farm Friends -- part of the John Deere Tractor stories for kids series

Farm Friends by Jack Redwing —

No tractor stories list would be complete without a John Deere tractor! In this adorable, lift-the-flap board book, preschoolers will follow the green tractor around the farm, meeting the animals that live there. Little kids love lift-the-flap books and farm animals, so this a winning combo 🙂

The Rusty, Trusty Tractor

The Rusty, Trusty Tractor by Joy Cowley —

In this sweet, inter-generational story, a grandfather teaches his grandson that new isn’t always better. When a tractor salesmen challenges that Grandpa’s old tractor won’t survive much longer (even betting 20 jelly donuts), Grandpa’s faith stays true to his rusty, trusty tractor. Young tractor lovers will enjoy watching Grandpa’s old tractor trudge along through hay harvesting season and will be cheering for the old tractor to keep going strong!
