Letter J

learning letter J

It’s time for learning letter J! Below is my free preschool alphabet lesson plans for learning letter J. Help your child letter J all week long with worksheets, books, crafts, songs, and STEM activities. Since my name starts with a “J,” I am pretty partial to this letter 🙂 I was determined to make this week lots of fun so we read one of my favorite stories (Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw), created really cool crafts together, and made fresh squeezed orange juice!

Sheep in a Jeep 5 Minute Stories by Nancy Shaw
  • Book: Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw. I love all of the sheep stories and we’d borrowed them many times from out library before I found this Sheep in a Jeep 5-Minutes Stories compilation. Sheep in a Jeep is a funny story about distracted sheep who are out for a drive in their red jeep. The silly sheep get stuck in a mud puddle, fly down a hill, and crash into a tree! Get read to giggle your way through this book 🙂
  • Craft: We made a Sheep in the Jeep picture! Print off the Jeep and Sheep template to make your own. Cut out the pictures, color your jeep, and glue them onto a piece of paper. Draw a trail for your jeep to drive on or a mud puddle.

  • Song: Sing “Wheels on the Jeep” (tune of “Wheels on the Bus”)

For our jeep lyrics we sang:

Wheels on the jeep bump on the ground, on the ground, on the ground. The wheels on the jeep bump on the ground all through the hills.

Wipers on the jeep go swish-swish-swish, swish-swish-swish, swish-swish-swish. Wipers on the jeep go swish-swish-swish all through the hills.

The horn on the jeep goes beep-beep-beep, beep-beep-beep, beep-beep-beep. The horn on the jeep goes beep-beep-beep all through the hills.

Sheep in the jeep go up and down, up and down, up and down. Sheep in the jeep go up and down all through the hills.

Tuesday — J is for Juice

  • STEM: make fresh squeezed orange juice together! This such a fun family activity 🙂 I sliced the oranges and my son pushed them down on the juicer until he got tired and I took over. We love fresh squeezed orange juice and he thought it was fun that he got to help make it. Plus, you can turn it into a mini science lesson and talk about the parts of an orange.
  • Air Writing: Ask your child to hold up a hand and trace letter shapes with their finger in the air.

Wednesday — J is for Jungle

"Over in the Jungle" book
  • Books: Check out Over in the Jungle: a rainforest rhyme by Marianne Berkes. This book is fun counting rhyme story with lots of awesome pictures! The pictures that were formed from clay by artist Jeanette Canyon that perfectly compliment Marianne Berkes’ sing-songy text. You and your little one will want to study these pictures over-and-over again to get all of the details incorporated onto each page. This book introduces a variety of amazing jungle animals. It also lends itself well to movement activities that preschoolers will love to do. At the end, there is a seek-and-find activity to search for all of the animals from the book, as well as a sneak-peek into the clay creations.
  • Craft: Collage Jungle— we cut out pictures of plants and trees from magazines and catalogs to create a collage. Once we had cut out all of the pictures we liked, we glued them onto a piece of green construction paper and made our own jungle picture!

Thursday — J is for Jaguar

  • Salt Tray Writing: Cover the bottom of a shallow tray or pie tin with table salt. Your child can take one finger to trace uppercase and lowercase letter J shapes in the salt.
  • Worksheet: Download and print this free worksheet so your preschooler can color lowercase j letters red and the uppercase Js blue.
Go, Baby Jaguar!
  • Book: We read Go, Baby Jaguar! featuring Diego (from the show Go, Diego, Go!) by Kirsten Larsen. This story is based on the TV episode about Diego helping reunited a baby jaguar with its mother. My son loves stories about mommies and babies and he enjoyed the “drama” of getting the baby safely up the mountain. Check you library for this story.

Friday — J is for Jumping

These little monkeys always seem to find trouble in this book featuring eight monkey stories! In Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, the monkeys fall off the bed one-by-one. As each little monkey gets hurt, Mama calls the doctor and the doctor says, “No more monkeys jumping on the bed!” I paired the stories with these small 5 Little Monkeys toys so that the toys could do the jumping and get all of the ouchies instead of my child! My son enjoyed acting out the stories in the book with his toys.
