Free Learning Letter K Lessons Plans:

Monday — K is for Koala

Tuesday — K is for Kitten

Wednesday — K is for Kite

In Grace Lin’s Kite Flying, a family makes the most of a windy day by building and flying a kite together. I love that the whole family is involved with the construction of the kite — they all go the craft store to get supplies and each person makes their own contribution to the kite. Finally finished, the family takes dragon kite outside to watch it take flight! Fantastic illustrations add to the fun of this story.

Will Hillenbrand’s Kite Day: a Bear and Mole story takes place on a lovely, windy day — perfect for flying a kite. Friends Bear and Mole decide to make a kite. They plan, collect supplies, measure, and construct (great for STEM lesson) and then take their new kite out for some flying fun! Suddenly a storm blows in and the kite escapes. Bear and Mole chase after their kite. Oh no! Is the gone forever? They find it stuck in a tree where it is sheltering baby birds from the storm 🙂

1. Color the kite and the bows. Decorate the kite with stickers!

2. Cut out the kite and the bows.

3. Glue a piece of string or yarn to the back to make a tail. Glue the bows onto the tail.

4. Turn your kite into a stick puppet by gluing on a craft stick to the back side of your kite. Let your glue dry. Once dry, “fly” your kite around your home!

Thursday — K is for Kangaroo

Friday — K is for King

In this funny story, a king is searching for the perfect cook. The king meets Wobbly Bob, who is perfect for the job except for one problem–Wobbly Bob is afraid of almost everything. In order to help him feel brave, the king accompanies Wobbly Bob through all of the steps that go into cooking a meal. As always, Donaldson’s rhyming text is fantastic and David Roberts’ illustrations capture all of the humor.

1. Select a color for the letter K. Adults can draw the letter and let preschoolers practice their scissors skills by cutting out the K shape.

2. Glue letter K onto a piece of construction paper.

3. Select another color and draw a crown. Cut out the crown.

4. Glue the crown on top of the K.

5. Decorate the crown with jewel stickers!
