Books about Moms

Whether it is Mother’s Day or any other time of year, here are stories celebrating moms! My son and I have read all of these books about moms and we really enjoyed them. Each one speaks to the special relationship between a mother and her child.

Ten Books About Moms

1. Me and Mama by Cozbi A. Cabrera–

I love this story about the beautiful bond between a mother and a daughter who spend a rainy day together. This lovely story takes you with them through all the special moments they spend together. Whether it is eating breakfast together, doing hair, or walking the dog, spending time together is a precious thing. After a fun day together, it is time for bed and a good night kiss. “I love you, mama.”

2. Just Me and My Mom by Mercer Mayer —

My son really likes Little Critter stories and this one is particularly sweet to read with him. In this story, Little Critter and Mom plan a special day together. They take a train into the city and tour museums and go to a fancy restaurant. In true Little Critter style, his natural curiosity and desire to be a “big kid” get the better of him and he loses the train tickets, touches things he is not supposed to touch at the museum, and brings a frog to the restaurant. Mom and Little Critter end up eating a hot dog. On the way home, Little Critter cuddles his Mom during the train ride, concluding a beautiful day of togetherness, even if it didn’t go quite as planned.

3. Mama, Do You Love Me? by Barbara M. Joosse —

A long time ago, my coworker discovered this book and fell in love with it. She shared it with me and I am so happy to be able to share it with you! A mother tells her child that she loves her daughter more than anything! Set in the arctic, this beautifully illustrated story reassures children that even if mom is angry, she stills loves her children. No matter the scenario the little girl comes up, her mother tells her that she will love her. Overall a sweet story about how much moms love their children.

4. Mommy Hugs by Karen Katz —

This short and sweet story is great for 2-3 year olds. In this book, author Karen Katz shares 10 different kinds of mommy hugs — each one super special! Get ready to give lots of hugs as you read this one 🙂 This book also has counting woven into the story so your preschooler can help you count all of the hugs. My favorite hug is the “I love you” bedtime hug–you get to do it 10 times!

5. Are You My Mother? by PD Eastman —

A baby bird hatches while its mother is off finding food. Alone, the little bird leaves the nest in search of its mother. The bird finds all sorts of creatures and things, asking each one, “Are you my mother?” Readers will giggle as the baby bird asks a cow, a dog, a big machine, and a ship. Baby and mother are reunited in a sweet ending.

6. My Monster Mama Loves Me So by Laura Leuck —

This sweet, rhyming story is an ode to a mama’s love for her little one. It chronicles all of the loving things mom’s do for their little monsters. Mom’s play with, cheer-on, protect, comfort, and take care of their little ones, whether they be monsters or humans. Preschoolers will giggle at the gross things little monster likes, such as lizard juice and bugs.

7. The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown —

A mommy rabbit gently reassures her little bunny that no matter what may come or where the little one may go, mommy will always be there. The little bunny comes up with all sorts of fanciful scenarios that would take it away from mommy. Mommy, however, always has the perfect reply. A beautiful story about the strength of a mother’s love.

8. The Mommy Book by Todd Parr–

Moms are awesome! This book highlights lots of moms. Moms have a variety of jobs and interests. Even though moms like different things, they all like hanging out with their kids. Whether it is teaching something new, singing songs, or reading bedtime stories, moms love their kids!

9. Mamasaurus by Stephen Lomp —

One day babysaurus accidently slides down mamasaurus’ back and sails into the jungle. He can’t find mama! He starts asking the other little dinos if they have seen his mama. Each little dino describes their own mama dino, but none of them are quite right. His mama isn’t very fast, she doesn’t have a long horn, and she can’t fly. Babysaurus’ mom moves slowly and takes great big steps. She has a long neck and is very tall. He tells the little T-Rex that his mama gets him the yummiest leaves from the highest branches! Then mamasaurus appears. Hooray! Babysaurus is so excited and proclaims that she is the best mama in the jungle.

10. Pirate Boy by Eve Bunting —

In this sweet, reassuring story, a mother’s love will follow her son anywhere, even onboard a pirate ship. The boy throws out all sorts of scenarios where the pirates will take him away and not give him back. No distance, no sea monsters, and no unruly pirates will be able to stop Mom.
