We are experiencing a heat wave and stuck indoors because it is way too hot to play outside. So not only are we melting, but my 4 year-old is getting antsy from lack of outdoor running around time. I’ve been wanting to make ice cream with him for a while now, and today seemed like the perfect opportunity to try it together. I found a great recipe online from Kim @ Best Ideas for Kids. It only needs 5 ingredients and 2 zip lock bags, so I decided to try it. This recipe was easy to make and my son was able to be involved with all of the steps in the process. Surprise, surprise, his favorite part was eating it 🙂 My husband got home just as we were making our ice cream so he got to taste it too. We all agreed that our ice cream was yummy and we will definitely be making this again. We are already thinking of things to add to it next time — chocolate chips, caramel sauce, sprinkles!
Since just about everything reminds of a great children’s book, I am already planning tonight’s ice cream-themed bedtime stories. The first ones to spring to mind are:
1) Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems. This book is part of the fantastic Elephant and Piggie series. While all of the books in this series are amazing, I do have my favorites 🙂 In this story, Gerald debates the pros and cons of sharing his ice cream with his best friend, Piggie. While Gerald stresses over this decision, his ice cream begins to melt. My son and I giggle our way through the book as Gerald fails to realize that his ice cream is melting away. Don’t worry, there is a happy ending with more ice cream! Check this story out from your library or buy it through Amazon here.
2) Keith the Cat with the Magic Hat by Sue Hendra. This is such a cute story about a cat with ice cream cone on his head that he says is is magic hat. Is it really magic or just a series of coincidences? Kids will love reading about Keith’s adventures with his magic hat!
Check out it from your local library, or you can buy through it Amazon here.
